  Career Collaborative, Inc.
  President :
Susan Schiro

Career Collaborative was founded in December 1997 by Dr. Susan Fox Schiro to help low-income people from the Boston area become permanently economically self-sufficient by helping them get full time permanent jobs that pay $20,000-$30,000 a year with benefits, keep those jobs, and make career progress. Since its inception in 1998, Career Collaborative has demonstrated that comprehensive employment services combined with intensive supportive and mentoring services lead to continuous employment:

  • Seventy percent (70%) of our clients have completed two years of continuous employment or are currently employed and working toward that goal.
  • Mentees have earned more than $7.25 million during their mentoring period compared to our cumulative expenses of $2.4 million. These numbers understate our value to society. Once employed, clients' need for public assistance is sharply reduced and eventually eliminated.
  • Career Collaborative has helped over 1,100 people. In 2008 we will serve over 250 low-income adults.
Once employed, our clients become role models and mentors for their children, families, friends, and acquaintances. Their children grow up expecting to be self-supporting. Society benefits: as people move from poverty to economic self-sufficiency, they contribute to the region's prosperity.

Who are our clients?

  • Low-income, motivated men and women who are chronically unemployed or underemployed
  • Historically, they do not know how to get and keep a job with career potential
  • They are ages 22 to 55, with a median age of 34.
  • 72% are female, 63% are black and 21% are Hispanic
  • The majority are single parents
  • They live in Boston, especially Roxbury, Mattapan and Dorchester

What do your donations support?

  • Job-search course, four weeks: $1,000 per client

  • Individual job-search assistance: $2,500

  • Mentor/coach a client for at least two years after employed: $2,500

  • Staff: 11 full time staff (8 full time program employees)

  • Volunteers: 150 very generous volunteers
