Asian Outreach Program
Our Asian Outreach Program provides assistance with access to basic human needs for the area’s diverse Asian population. Recently promoted to a full-fledged Unit, AOP has served thousands of indigent clients in the areas of domestic violence, family, housing, immigration, benefits and employment law. By establishing AOP as a Unit, we salute the enormous contribution the program has made to the Asian-American community, and extend our firm commitment to providing ongoing resources and institutional backing for these essential services to the community.
Elderly Unit
The GBLS Elder Unit has a number of attorneys dedicated to the protection of elder rights. Staff emphasize life-sustaining benefits for senior citizens, protecting vulnerable elders from unwarranted guardianship, and advocating for an improved quality of life in nursing home facilities. In addition, we represent elderly clients in all of our issue areas, including housing, domestic violence and immigration.
Employment and Welfare Unit
Employment issues, including unjust terminations, withholding of wages, and low-wage worker’s rights have also been a steady concern for our clients. In addition, our Welfare attorneys work on behalf of our clients to secure access to adequate educating and job training for people in transition from welfare to work.
Family Law Unit
The GBLS Family Unit addresses domestic violence, matirmony, divorce, relocation services and child custody. GBLS advocates work with battered victims to obtain restraining orders, to file for custody of children, to establish safe housing and work environments, and to access counseling services to help the victim recover, and regain control over her life. Because battering is the largest cause of injury to women between ages 15 and 44 in the United States, victims of domestic violence are given priority in each of our legal units.
Health & Disability Unit
People needing Medicare, Medicaid, housing assistance and job training often require representation to secure those benefits. GBLS represents the elderly, the disabled, the sick- anyone vulnerable and needing benefits in the areas of health and disability. For these most vulnerable members of society, receiving Social Security or other benefits can literally make the difference between life and death.
Housing Unit
The GBLS Housing works to prevent eviction and homelessness for low-income tenants. Escalating housing costs in the Boston area threaten many low-income families with homelessness, which in turn leads to community instability. Our housing attorneys work to establish rights and access to shelter for the homeless, and help homeless families secure shelter and permanent housing.
Immigration Unit
GBLS' Immigration attorneys work to protect the rights of newcomers to this country. Whether it is a woman facing genital mutilation if she returns home, or a pro-democracy activist risking kidnap and torture, our attorneys struggle to enable those people most at risk to remain within the safety of the United States. Our Immigration Unit has influenced changing laws, and attained citizenship and security for thousands of immigrants at risk. The Immigration Unit also operates a Battered Immigrant Woman's program, which assists women to leave the threat of an abusive relationship without risking her status in this country.
