Mission:
Boston Area Farm Gleaning Project, now incorporated as a 501 c 3 corporation -- Boston Area Gleaners, Inc., has as its mission to rescue crops left in the field by area farmers, which would otherwise be plowed under. Project Coordinator contacts the farmers for availability and permission, and then arranges crews to go out to the farms to glean - to harvest for charity. The produce is then transported to area food pantries, meal programs and shelters, to the people who need fresh produce. The produce is sometimes slightly damaged by insects or frost, but still perfectly nutritious, just needing a paring knife. Often produce is left because it is not worthwhile for the farmers to harvest after the farmers markets and community supported agriculture programs have ended. The involvement of volunteers is also beneficial, hunger program recipients also invited, to introduce everyone to the beauty and utility of area farms. A second Project program is to collect produce seconds at the end of farmers markets (presently just the Arlington Market) and take the produce to area food pantries and shelters. Farmers do not purvey their greens a second day, and often there is excess and imperfect produce they are willing to part with. Then in August when the tomatoes and corn come in, market fees are forgiven so that farmers will donate more produce, especially fruit, to take to a Seconds Market at the public housing location in town where the produce is purveyed at $2 a large grocery bag. Arlington Human Services manages -- it is a popular program! Started in 2009, we salvage seconds from retail stores, principally Trader Joe's in Arlington Heights, but also Wilsons Farm in Lexington. We collect and deliver to food pantries and meal programs, also shelters, from 2 or 3 to 20 40-50 pound bags of produce and bread seconds, prepared foods such as salads, also such as hummus, also meats, and even flowers, all from Trader Joe's. From Wilson's we collect primarily potato seconds.
